is interested in exploring the population dynamics of the red maple tree. the ecologist cores 100 living trees to determine their ages. (by counting the rings) and uses these data to construct a life table. what type of life table will she cinstruct?
a.cohort
b. static.
c neither
A young ecologist?
Okay, how about we look at the definitions for each of these:
A cohort table is where you track a group of individuals that were produced/born around the same time ("cohorts") and show what becomes of them. The table covers YEARS of data if trees are what are studied.
A static table is where you record the age of an organism at it's death regardless of it's age or when it was produced. You don't worry about the ages of the organisms until they die.
The third type of study is the age distribution study where you sample and record the age of the living organisms that exist in an area at that moment in time regardless of when they were produced.
Which of these is your ecologist is doing?
